Following winter storms that lashed California with rain and snow in recent weeks, the state is completely free of drought for the first time in 25 years, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The last time California had no regions considered “abnormally dry” or in drought conditions was in December 2000.

Gov. Gavin Newsom's finance director is set to present the governor's spending proposal for the state's 2026-2027 budget on Friday.
It comes after demonstrations in Los Angeles and across the nation following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis.
“As we’ve seen in past years, California can go quickly from wet to dry conditions, and we are expecting dry conditions to return through the rest of January. This will have an impact on statewide rain and snowfall averages, which are expected to decrease,” Anderson said.
